Netherlands care & insurance system
In principle, healthcare includes all care which has the aim of making people better or preventing them from becoming sick, and the provision of other care for those who require it. The Netherlands spends a lot of money on healthcare – more than 57 billion euros in 2003, or 12% of gross domestic product. That is more than 3,500 euros per Dutch resident. This care is partly paid for by the patients themselves through their healthcare insurance, but the Social Support Act (WMO) and the Exceptional Medical Expenses Act (AWBZ) also contribute.
