Dutch system of healthcare and insurance
In principle, healthcare includes all care which aims to treat people or prevent them from becoming sick or to provide people in need of care with that care. Large sums of money are spent each year in the Netherlands on healthcare. In 2009, the amount spent was over €60 billion. The patients pay for part of these costs themselves via their health insurance, but some of these costs are also paid for via the Social Support Act (WMO) and the Exceptional Medical Expenses Act (AWBZ).
