The NMT will help you on your way as a dentist in the Netherlands

Welcome to the NMT, the professional organisation for dentists in the Netherlands. Membership of the NMT is open to all dentists and dental specialists. The NMT also offers a complaints procedure; you are legally obliged to have such a complaints procedure.

Registration as dentist
The title of dentist is a protected title in the Netherlands. It may only be used by dentists who are registered in the BIG (Individual Health Care Professions Act) register. Before starting work as a dentist, you must therefore join the BIG register. Dentists with a qualification gained outside the Netherlands can request a certificate of professional competence and then join the BIG register. For further information, visit the BIG register website.
To demonstrate that you are maintaining your professional level, you can also join the voluntary quality register of dentists.

Command of the Dutch language
The NMT regards having an adequate command of the Dutch language as very important. Read about how you can satisfy this requirement.

Code of conduct and guidelines
As a dentist practising in the Netherlands, you must work in accordance with the code of conduct and adhere to a number of guidelines. Agreements between the practice holder and the practice employee/deputy must be set down in writing. The Guideline on deputies/practice employees was developed to assist in this regard.

What does the government do for you?
It is important that you are aware of the workings of the Dutch care and insurance system. Before you start work, your employer must register you with the Dutch tax authority. In addition, as an employee, a number of employee insurance schemes are compulsory. Read more.

Licences, legislation and regulations
As a dentist originating from outside the EEA, you must have a work permit. In addition, as a dentist you will be subject to a great deal of legislation and regulations. The NMT has summarised the most important legislation and regulations for you.
